SUBJECT:
Recall Campaign 01V-030 Check of Steering Coupling
MODEL:
X5
SITUATION:
Some X5s produced from September 2000 until mid-January 2001 may not have had a section of the steering spindle inserted completely into the coupling, therefore the fastening bolt may not fully engage the spindle as designed.
A copy of the customer notification letter is shown for your convenience.
AFFECTED VEHICLES:
This Recall Campaign involves X5 vehicles with M54 and M62 engines which were produced from September 2000 to mid January 2001.
In order to determine if a specific vehicle is affected by this Recall Campaign, it will be necessary to utilize the "Service Menu" of the DCS (Dealer Communication System). Based on the response of the system, either proceed with the corrective action or take no further action.
The Chassis Number Ranges as shown are only for informational purposes and are not to be considered as the only deciding factor.
PARTS INFORMATION
Part Number Description Quantity
32 30 1 094 718 Torx(r) bolt 1
PROCEDURE:
Open the hood and look down alongside the engine on the driver's side so that you can see the upper steering spindle where it fits into the aluminum u-joint assembly. This area is under the heater water valves and you may have to hold the hoses aside to see the spindle.
Visually check to see how far the black corrugated upper spindle is inserted into the joint assembly.
There should be less than 5 mm clearance between the end of the joint and the shoulder on the shaft as illustrated.
If the spindle is not properly installed, there will be more than 10 mm of the squared end of the spindle visible between the joint and the shoulder of the spindle.
If this situation is found, remove and discard the Torx(r) bolt, slide the spindle into the joint so that the notch in the spindle aligns with the bolt hole and install a new bolt, part number 32 30 1 094 718, and tighten to 28 Nm.
LABEL INSTRUCTIONS
This Recall Campaign has been assigned code number 297 After the vehicle has been checked, and corrected if necessary, obtain a label (SD 92-155) and:
a. emboss your BMW dealer warranty number in the middle of the label (1);
b. punch out code number 297 printed on the label and,
c. affix the label to the B pillar as shown.
If the vehicle already has a label from a previous Service Action/Recall Campaign, affix the new label next to the old one. Do not affix one label on top of another one because a number from an underlying label could appear in the punched-out hole of the new label.
WARRANTY INFORMATION
Reimbursement for this Recall Campaign will be via Campaign Entry.
