Starter Motor: Service and Repair






Removing And Installing/Replacing Starter Motor (M54/M56)


Follow instructions for disconnecting and connecting battery.

Disconnect and cover battery negative terminal.

Remove reinforcement plate on front axle support, please refer to: Service and Repair

Caution!
The section "Removing and Installing reinforcement plate on front axle support " contains important installation instructions.







If fitted:
Remove vacuum reservoir for exhaust flap.

Unclip fuel line ( 1 ) from holders ( 2 ).







NOTE:
For a better overview, this work step is shown on an engine that has been removed.

Unlock plug ( 1 ) of crankshaft pulse generator and disconnect.







Release nut ( 1 ) and disconnect battery positive leads from starter motor.

Installation:
Tightening Torque:
Electrical Leads to Starter 5 Nm
Support to Starter 5 Nm
Support to Crankcase 47 Nm
Starter Motor mounting to Transmission Bell Housing 45 Nm
Bolt connection, pole tube 6 Nm
Heat Shield to Starter Motor 6 Nm






Release nuts ( 1 ).

Remove lines ( 2 ) from starter motor.







Release both starter motor mounting bolts ( 1 ) on transmission:

Release starter mounting bolts from transmission output end with a long extension and a universal joint.

Installation:
Tightening Torque:








Withdraw starter motor ( 1 ) from transmission flange and remove towards bottom.







Installation:
Check starter pinion and ring gear for damage.
