34 51 01

Woodcliff Lake, NJ
July 2001
Service Engineering

PERFORM THE PROCEDURE OUTLINED IN THIS SERVICE INFORMATION ON ALL AFFECTED VEHICLES BEFORE CUSTOMER DELIVERY OR THE NEXT TIME THEY ARE IN THE SHOP FOR MAINTENANCE OR REPAIRS.

SUBJECT
Recall Campaign 01V-197 Check of Brake Booster Attaching Nuts

MODEL
X5

SITUATION
Due to an assembly error during vehicle production, either of two self-locking nuts (or both) that secure the pedal assembly to the booster may have been cross-threaded on the booster studs that protrude through the firewall. In such a case, the nut(s) would not be fully seated on the stud(s).

BMW will conduct a recall campaign to inspect the two lock nuts to determine if they are properly seated. If the nuts are not fully seated or are cross-threaded, the brake booster must be replaced.

AFFECTED VEHICLES
This Recall Campaign involves X5 vehicles with M54 and M62 engines which were produced from March 8th through 11th, 2001.

In order to determine if a specific vehicle is affected by this Recall Campaign, it will be necessary to utilize the "Service Menu" of the DCS (Dealer Communication System).

Based on the response of the system, either proceed with the corrective action or take no further action.

The Chassis Number Ranges shown are only for informational purposes and are not to be considered as the only deciding factor.

PARTS INFORMATION

PROCEDURE

Remove the under dash panel and pedal assembly cover.

If the nuts are properly seated and there is no sign of cross threading on the studs, no repair is required.

If the nuts are not fully seated, or if there is evidence that the nuts were cross threaded onto the studs, the brake booster assembly must be replaced. Refer to Repair Manual, section 34 33 505.

LABEL INSTRUCTIONS

This Recall Campaign has been assigned code number 306. After the vehicle has been checked, and corrected if necessary, obtain a label (SD 92-170) and:

a. emboss your BMW dealer warranty number in the middle of the label (1);

b. punch out code number 306 printed on the label and,

c. affix the label to the B pillar as shown.

If the vehicle already has a label from a previous Service Action/Recall Campaign, affix the new label next to the old one. Do not affix one label on top of another one because a number from an underlying label could appear in the punched-out hole of the new label.

WARRANTY INFORMATION
Reimbursement for this Recall will be via Campaign Entry.
