Body - Sunroof Wind Noise

GROUP 54
Special Roofs

54 50 02

Woodcliff Lake, NJ
Service Information

February 2002

SUBJECT
Wind Noise from Sunroof

MODEL
X5 produced before 10/2000

SITUATION
Some owners of X5s produced prior to 10/2000 may complain of a wind noise even though the sunroof panel is properly adjusted.

CAUSE
The glass sunroof panel may be very slightly undersized, which allows a slight air gap between the glass panel and the sunroof seal on the body. This gap can produce a wind noise.

CORRECTION
A sunroof seal that is 0.3 mm thicker was introduced into production in 10/2000. This thicker seal compensates for variations the glass panel size, and provides a tight seal without air gaps.

This thicker seal is now available as a replacement part.

PROCEDURE
In case of a customer complaint, first verify that the sunroof panel is correctly adjusted per Repair Manual, section 54 12 003. If the panel is properly adjusted, verify that the noise is caused by improper panel to seal contact by applying masking tape over the panel/seal joint and test driving, or by utilizing an ultrasonic leak detector.

If a leak is found to be causing the noise, replace the sunroof seal with part number 54 13 7 064 664 as described in the Repair Manual, section 54 12 120.
