PERFORM THE PROCEDURE OUTLINED IN THIS SERVICE INFORMATION ON ALL AFFECTED VEHICLES THE NEXT TIME THEY ARE IN THE SHOP FOR MAINTENANCE OR REPAIRS.
SUBJECT:
Missing Power Supply to Antenna Amplifier on E53 with Navigation
MODEL:
E53 with Navigation System produced from 07/18/00 - 10/02/00
SITUATION:
Due to an incorrect wiring harness installed in the affected vehicles, the power supply to the audio antenna amplifier is missing. As a result, customer would complaint about total lack of reception on the AM band and limited FM reception.
AFFECTED VEHICLES:
This Service Action involves E53 (X5) vehicles with Navigation System, which were produced from July 18th, up to October 2nd of 2000.
In order to determine if a specific vehicle is affected by this Service Action, it will be necessary to utilize the "Service Menu" of the DCS (Dealer Communication System). Based on the response of the system, either proceed with the corrective action or take no further action.
The Chassis Number Ranges as shown are only for informational purposes and are not to be considered as the only deciding factor.
CORRECTION:
On all affected vehicles voltage should be supplied to the audio antenna amplifier through an electrical bridge (between pins 2 and 12) in connector X322.
LABEL INSTRUCTIONS
This Service Action has been assigned code number 293. After the vehicle has been checked, and corrected if necessary, obtain a label (SD 92-155) and:
a. emboss your BMW dealer warranty number in the middle of the label (1);
b. punch out code number 293 printed on the label and,
c. affix the label to the B pillar as shown.
If the vehicle already has a label from a previous Service Action/Recall Campaign, affix the new label next to the old one. Do not affix one label on top of another one because a number from an underlying label could appear in the punched-out hole of the new label.
PROCEDURE
The following parts are required to produce the electrical bridge:
-- repair cable with socket P/N 61 13 0 007 450 (1)
-- female pin connector P/N 61 13 1 376 206 (2)
1. Remove trunk floor panel (for removal instruction refer to RA 51 47 101, found in BMW Technical Information System - TIS).
2. Remove side flap panel from left-hand luggage compartment trim (for removal instruction refer to RA 51 47 172).
3. Remove side member cover strip and side member support as shown on the illustration.
4. Disconnect connector X322 (12-pin black), which is located on the side of audio amplifier bracket (1).
In the upper part of X322 (female pin connectors), the following pins have to be bridged:
-- Pin 2 (KL R from the Unloader relay K3) (1), and
-- Pin 12 (empty slot, to the antenna amplifier) (2)
5. Disassemble upper half of connector X322, as shown on the illustration.
6. Using BMW Tool 61 1 132 (1), remove pin 2 from connector X322.
7. Cut-off the female socket (1) from pin 2 (purple/white wire), and strip the insulation.
8. Prepare harness repair cable (PN 61 13 0 007 450),by shortening it to approximately 6" and stripping insulation from its end.
9. Crimp the harness repair cable P/N 61 13 0 007 (2) with the existing purple/white wire (1) from X322 by using socket connector PN 61 13 1 376 206 (3).
10. Insert crimped socket connector into slot 2 of connector X322.
11. Insert the other socket pin of the harness repair cable into slot 12 of X322.
12. Reconnect connector X322. Perform functional check by switching the radio to AM band stations.
13. Reinstall all previously removed components.
