SUBJECT:
Nakamichi CD Changer - Installation on E39, E53 Vehicles with NG Radios

MODEL:
E39, 5 Series from 09/00 (without DSP, or Nav system)
E53, X5 vehicles from 10/00 (without DSP, or Nav system)

SITUATION:
The New Generation of radios (CD53 - in-dash CD; and C53 - cassette radio) were introduced into series production respectively in September (E39) and October (E53) of '00. The NG radios feature increased functionality, and new Siemens connectors with revised pin assignments.

During the installation of a Nakamichi CD changer (in vehicles without a DSP amplifier, or Navigation system), the power/I-Bus cable (PN 82 11 0 004 618) and data cable (PN 82 11 0 004 617) found in the CD changer installation kit, have to be modified in order to be compatible with the NG radio.

PROCEDURE

In order to remove the radio from the vehicle:

1. Remove control button from the MID.

2. Insert Torx 1-10 (1) - as shown on the illustration and turn counter clockwise. Remove MID.

3. Insert Torx 1-15 (1) into locations indicated by black arrows (as shown on the illustration). Turn counter clockwise. Remove the radio.

4. From the power/I-bus CD changer installation cable (1) (PN 82 11 0 004 618), cut-off three female pin connectors (2) (red, black and white wires).

5. Using a "tap - run" connector (3) (e.g. 3M # 902; one side for 12-10 AWG wire, the other side for 18-14 AWG wire), connect red wire (5) of the installation cable (4) to the red/green wire (2) of the connector X18126(1) (pin 15 - Terminal 30, battery supply).

6. Using a "scotch-lock" connector (4) (PN 6113 8 364 566), connect the black wire of the installation cable (5) to the brown wire of the connector X18126 (1) (pin 12 - Terminal 31, ground).

7. Using a "scotch-lock" connector (2) (PN 61 13 8 364 566), connect the white wire of the installation cable (5) to the white/yellow wire of the connector X18126 (1) (pin 9 - I-Bus).

8. From the audio-data cable (PN 82 11 0 004 617), remove metal housing (1) (shielding's ground) from the connector on the radio side (as shown on the illustration).

9. Disassemble the connector housing, by sliding out the white plastic cover (1).

10. Using a small screwdriver (2), carefully press on pin's locking tab, while at the same time gently pulling out a wire from the connector.

Attention:
The AMP connector housing has two locking steps, for that reason the pin's locking tab must be depressed twice.

11. Remove all five female pin connectors (as shown on the illustration).

Important:
The black shielding wire (1) removed from position number 3, is obsolete and should be taped-back to the data cable.

12. From the main radio connector housing, remove the audio CD changer connector - X13321 (1), by pressing on locking tab (2) and pulling it up.

13. Disassemble X13321 connector housing by sliding the cover (2) to the side.

14. Remove the following female pins (2) from the connector X13321:

-- pin 2 (brown wire)

-- pin 8 (yellow wire)

-- pin 9 (black wire)

15. Insert four pin connectors (1) of the audio-data installation cable (previously removed from the connector housing), into the vacant slots of the connector X13321:

-- pin 2---black wire

-- pin 3---gray wire

-- pin 8--- white wire

-- pin 9---red wire

16. Tape-back the removed pin connectors to the radio harness (1).

17. Route both installation cables (power/I-Bus and data) towards glove box, according to the Nakamichi CD changer installation instruction.
