This Service Information bulletin supersedes Service Measure B51 204 03 dated September 2003.
SUBJECT
CD Cover Sticks in Closed Position
MODEL
E53 (X5)
SITUATION
Some vehicles may exhibit a problem where the CD cover sticks in the closed position, and in some cases does not open unless it is pried open.
CAUSE
There are two possible causes of this problem:
1. The wood trim on the CD cover is warped.
2. The MID/Radio is not installed correctly, and is causing interference.
CORRECTION
On a customer complaint basis, check the wood trip and the MID/Radio installation.
PROCEDURE
1. Remove the wood trim and check on a flat plate to see if it is straight. A maximum of 1 mm of distortion is allowed. If the trim is warped it should be replaced.
2. Check to ensure that the MID/Radio is installed correctly:
a. Remove the A/C control panel from the dash using a plastic tool (See Repair Instruction 64 11 749).
b. Reach into the console with your hand and push the MID/Radio outward.
c. If the MID/Radio can come out easily, then one or both of the retaining clips may not correctly snapped in place.
d. During reinstallation, it can sometimes take a lot of force to push the MID/Radio correctly in place.
3. If the trim is straight with no runs in the clear coat that are causing interference, and the MID/Radio is properly installed, replace the CD cover flap, part number 51 45 8 408 783.
