Group 65
Sound System, Cruise, Alarms

65 53 01
Service Engineering

Woodcliff Lake, NJ

March 2001

SUBJECT
False Alarms Caused by Hood Switch

MODEL
X5 (E53) Vehicles produced before February 2001

SITUATION
Intermittently a false alarm is triggered. The alarm counter in DIS shows the alarm was triggered by the hood switch

CAUSE
Body assembly tolerances can cause the hood switch to have insufficient travel.

CORRECTION
On a customer complaint basis only, using DIS or MoDiC, confirm that the false alarm was set by the hood switch as follows:

-- In "Diagnosis", select - "Function selection / Complete vehicle / Body / Locking and security functions / Burglar alarm system / Test schedule." (This provides access to the burglar alarm system diagnosis program.)

-- Then select - "Fault symptoms / Option 3. Anti theft issues false alarm"

-- Then select - "Continue troubleshooting? "Yes"". (This gives access to the alarm counter, which displays the alarm system component that caused the alarm to trigger.)

If the alarm was not triggered by the hood contact, continue troubleshooting.

If the alarm was triggered by the hood contact, remove and replace the hood switch with new hood switch with an extended plunger. Refer to repair instruction 61 31 241
