SUBJECT:
IHKA Settings Change Back to Previous Setting

MODEL:
E39 (5 Series), E53 (X5) Vehicles with IHKA

SITUATION:
Customers who enter an unlocked vehicle, then set the A/C to new settings while driving, find that after locking and unlocking the vehicle, the A/C settings change back to a previous setting.

CAUSE:
The remote unlock button must be pressed before turning on the ignition, if any changes in the A/C settings are to be retained in memory. This applies when Vehicle and Key Memory (VKM) is set to "Key Selective / Active".

Note
That the VKM default setting for "Key selective" is "Active".

CORRECTION:
Do not replace any components. This is normal vehicle operation

In case of a customer complaint, offer the customer the following two alternatives:

1. Demonstrate to the customer how the "Key selective" feature for A/C operates. Show how the A/C settings are retained for each key. Then, if the customer wishes to keep this feature active, and to avoid any further confusion, suggest that the customer routinely presses the remote unlock button when entering an unlocked car.

2. Set "Key selective" to "Not active". Note that with this selection, A/C settings will no longer be retained for each key. The A/C settings will be retained from the last time the ignition was turned off.

This feature of operation should also be discussed with the customer when deciding on the VKM settings prior to vehicle retail delivery. Unless requested otherwise, "Key selective" should be programmed "Not Active" at that time.
