SUBJECT:
E53 Radio AM Band Alternator "Whine" from the CPT 7000 Phone
MODEL:
E53, X5 vehicles produced from 10/00 with NG MID radios (without DSP) and CPT 7000 Phone
SITUATION:
Customer may complain of interference (alternator "whine" noise) when tuning to certain weak-signal AM band stations, after the BMW CPT 7000 Cellular phone has been installed in the vehicle.
CAUSE:
Insufficient filtering at the phone's PSE Box power supply circuit.
CORRECTION :
On a customer complaint basis only, install noise reducing capacitor at the PSE box power supply according to the procedure described below.
PROCEDURE
1. Remove trunk's floor panel (for removal instruction refer to RA 51 47 101, found in BMW Technical Information System - TIS).
2. Disconnect battery's negative terminal.
3. Remove side flap panel from left-hand luggage compartment trim (for removal instruction refer to RA 51 47 172).
Remove side member cover strip and side member support as shown on the illustration.
4. Locate telephone connector (12-pin, natural) X400 (1). Disconnect connector X400.
5. In the upper part of X400 (female pin connectors) locate the following socket:
- Pin 1 (battery supply, KL30) - red wire (1)
6. Disassemble upper half of connector X400, as shown on the illustration.
7. Using BMW Tool 61 1 132 (1), remove pin 1 from connector X400.
8. Cut-off female socket (1) from just removed pin 1. Strip the insulation.
9. Cut-off ring connector from the red lead of the capacitor PN 01 00 1 466 188(2).
10. Crimp the red lead of the capacitor with the red wire (pin 1) from X400 by using socket connector PN 61 13 1 376 206 (3).
11. Insert crimped connection into slot number 1 of X400 (1). Resemble connector X400.
12. Ground the black lead of the capacitor (2) at the amplifier mounting stud (3) as shown on the illustration.
13. Reinstall all removed components.
