SUBJECT
Turn Signal Lamp Installation

MODEL
E46 (3 Series) coupe/convertible. Vehicles from 09/01

SITUATION 1

When installing a turn signal lamp, a bracket must be installed to ensure proper mounting.

SITUATION 2

The retaining fork breaks during turn signal lamp installation. The lamp can still be installed using an alternate installation procedure.

PROCEDURE 1

1. Select the appropriate metal bracket (1) for the lamp being installed (LH or RH).

2. Assemble the metal bracket to the existing plastic signal lamp bracket as shown.

3. Install the lamp assembly in the vehicle, and using a screwdriver (1), torque the fixing screw to 1.5 N.m

PROCEDURE 2

A lamp with a broken retaining fork may still be used - follow the installation procedure below:

1. Using diagonal cutters (2), cut off the retaining fork at the point where the forks begin (1). The cut should be approximately at right angles (90°) to the edge of the remaining bracket, and should remove both the unbroken fork and the remains of the broken fork.

2. Select the appropriate metal bracket (1) for the lamp being installed (LH or RH).

3. With the lamp upside down position the metal bracket, and with a marker, mark the location of the hole (A) on the plastic bracket.

4. Temporarily remove the metal bracket, and drill a 3.5 mm hole at the position marked (A).

5. Reinstall the metal bracket.

6. With the lamp positioned as shown (top side up), rivet the metal bracket (1) into place using a standard 1/8" x 1/4" button-head aluminum rivet (2). Note that the rivet head must be on the top side of the lamp and be in direct contact with the plastic bracket.

7. Install the turn signal assembly in the vehicle, and using a screwdriver (1), torque the fixing screw to 1.5 N.m
