SUBJECT:
Short Circuit Causes Various Instrument Cluster Faults
MODEL:
Z3 (E36/7) Vehicles produced from 9/95 to 3/00
Situation:
A short to the wiring harness to connector X16 of the instrument cluster may cause any of the following:
* Check engine lamp illuminated
* CAN bus faults in DME, DSC, AGS, and Instrument cluster
* Brake wear indicator, park brake indicator, or SRS warning illuminated
* Various dials and gauges inoperative
* No crank/no start
* No chime, no board computer, no clock
* Fuses 23, 25, 27, or 31 blown
Procedure:
1. Remove the instrument cluster (Refer to Repair Instruction 62 21 000)
2. Check the wiring harness to the instrument cluster white plug connector (1) at the point it would touch the support bracket (2).
3. Repair any damaged wires, and tape over the sharp edge on the metal bracket (1) to prevent recurrence.
4. Reinstall the instrument cluster
