Draining and Filling Fuel Tank
Draining And Filling Fuel Tank
CAUTION!
Observe relevant country safety legislation and regulations! Ensure adequate ventilation in the place of work! Connect the exhaust and extraction systems to the exhaust tailpipe.
The electric fuel pump must not operate without fuel! After servicing before the first engine start-up, fill the fuel tank via the fuel filling line with at least 5 l fuel.
Drawing off through filler pipe
Switch on engine and run for 10 - 15 seconds to enable intake hose on air valve to fill with fuel. Fuel can be drawn out of left and right sides of tank through filler neck, leaving only a small residue. This residual quantity is drawn off after fuel level indicator sensor (right(left) has been removed.
Slide a suitable suction hose into filler neck about 130 cm, twisting slightly if necessary.
Draw out fuel with suction unit as far as possible.
NOTE: When removing hose, avoid damaging the return baffle plate.
Installation:
Fill fuel into suction unit via filler aperture, inserting hose approx. 40 cm in length to do so.
Suction check
Remove rear seat cushion. Unscrew covers on left and right sides. After disconnecting plug connections on fuel level sensors, reduction of fuel level in both halves of tank can be monitored with a multimeter.
Fuel level drops and resistance decreases.
Drawing off via right section of tank
Spark Ignition engines up to 12/94 and diesel engines
Remove rear seat cushion. Unscrew covers on left and right sides.
Remove tank compensating hose (2) from right tank flange.
Installation:
Replace hose clips.
Connect suction unit on expansion hose using a hose and connector, and draw fuel out of left section of tank.
Spark ignition engines from 1/95
The tank compensating hose is filed in the tank.
NOTE: If suction problems arise at the filler pipe, fuel level sensors (right/left) must be removed before suction can continue.
Drawing off after removal of fuel level sensors (left/right)
Remove fuel level sensors (right/left),
Fuel (even residual quantity) can be drawn off.
