Removing and Installing Front Windscreen
NOTE:
When cementing the windshield, cements for cold and hot processing are permitted.
Remove and installing protective grill for air intake/heating,
Remove and installing inner rear view mirror,
Remove and installing both sun visors and counter-supports,
Remove and installing both trim sections for front roof pillar,
Cold processing:
Comply with instructions on cementing windows,
Hot processing:
Open rear end of aluminium membrane in cartridge before installing in cartridge oven.
Heat cement cartridges to 80 °C for one hour in oven (Sourcing Reference: BMW Parts Service).
Comply with instructions on cementing windows,
NOTE: Cover radiator/engine compartment (top) and front side walls with protective covers.
Cementing survey of windshield
Cementing Survey Of Windshield:
Raise engine hood fully (workshop position) and hold.
Unscrew left and right bolts.
Wires and hoses remain connected.
Place hood lid on protective covers.
sedan:
Open doors and pull off seals on left and right sides as far as roof.
sedan:
CAUTION!
Rubber seal is reinforced with aluminium strip: extend gently, turning slowly (front windscreen breakage).
Coupe:
CAUTION!
Carefully turn rubber seal to remove (front windscreen breakage).
Turn rubber seal from lower left to lower right and remove.
Mask roof connection of body with fabric adhesive tape (e.g. Tesa).

Cover cowl panel bottom edge with tape.
Attach adhesive to edges on front side panels.

Coupe - additional items:
Cover body at left and right A-pillars with adhesive tape.

Fit long knife (36 mm blade length, Sourcing Reference: BMW Parts Service) to the tool.
NOTE: If necessary, resharpen knife with machine running.
Carefully insert knife between body and windshield.
Guide handle of knife parallel to windshield.
Cut through cement bead all around and as close as possible to windscreen glass.

Lift out the windscreen using special tool 51 3 010.
Cut off old cement in body opening to a thickness of approx. 0.5 mm.
Cut off old cement carefully with an universal knife (sharp as a razor blade) to avoid damaging the paint finish in body opening.
Pull off adhesive tapes all round.
CAUTION!
To ensure long-term protection against corrosion, always touch up damage to paintwork (scratches or large areas of damage),
When reusing the windshield:
Scrape cement residue on windshield down to thickness of 0.5 mm with scraper (Sourcing Reference: BMW Parts Service).
sedan:
Install and press upper seal onto windscreen.
Coupe:
Fit gasket from top center to bottom left and right sides and press down into place.
CAUTION!
The basic filler must have hardened!
Treat windshield and body beside cemented area with BMW-approved materials (repair kit, Sourcing Reference: BMW Parts Service),
NOTE: Note ventilation time!
sedan:
Installation:
If the 3 spacer sections become damaged when the windshield is cut out, they must be replaced otherwise the cement bead will be compressed.
Coupe:
CAUTION!
In the Coupe, only 2 spacer sections may be fitted at a distance (A) from the center of the windshield. If a plastic pad is installed in the middle, it is essential to remove it (windshield would break).
Distance (A) = 350 mm
Install engine hood according to old paint impression.
If necessary, adjust hood lid to fit,
sedan:
Install special tool 51 3 032 at bottom of windshield.
NOTE: Remove special tools after installation of windscreen.
sedan:
Open the front doors.
CAUTION!
Do not close doors (risk of damage).
Fit special tool 51 3 031 on sheet metal fold and left and right sides.
NOTE: After installation of windshield, remove special tool again.
Cut nozzle to size.
Dimensions:
(A) = 6...8 mm
(B) = 10...11 mm
NOTE: For uniform application of cement bead, use cartridge pistol (operated by compressed air or electricity, Sourcing Reference: BMW Pants Service).
Check expiry date of cement!
If applicable, produce a sample bead before cementing.
Cartridge must be held perpendicular to the windscreen glass.
Shape of cement bead:
(A) = 6...8 mm
(B) = 10...11 mm
CAUTION!
Apply cement bead quickly and insert windscreen glass.
Skin formation time of cement, maximum 10 minutes.
sedan:
(A) Distance between cement bead and edge of windshield/bottom of windshield
(B) Distance between cement bead and edge of windshield/A-pillar
(C) Distance between cement bead and gasket
Dimensions:
(A) = 9 mm
(B) = 5 mm
(C) = 4 mm
Coupe:
(A) Distance between cement bead and edge of windshield/bottom of windshield
(B) Distance between cement bead and edge of windshield/A-pillar
(C) Distance between cement bead and edge of windshield/top
Dimensions:
(A) = 8 mm
(B) = 8 mm
(C) = 8 mm
Carefully insert the windshield into the body aperture using special tool 51 3 010 and press it into position. Push up glass until seal bears uniformly on roof. Fix glass in this position with Fabric adhesive tape (e.g. Tesa).
Length: 300 mm
Width: 50 mm
If necessary, support windshield glass from below with wooden wedge.
CAUTION!
Remove cement residue with Sika-Entferner 208 (Sourcing Reference: BMW Parts Service) before it has time to harden. Do not press out windscreen glass again for this purpose. Hardened cement can only be removed by machine.
Assemble car.
After the hardening time, remove support and adhesive tape.
NOTE: Leaks can be found by spraying water on the sealing lips or with an ultrasonic leak detector (refer to BMW Parts Service) and then eliminated by using a suitable nozzle.
