Campaign - M/T Drain Plug Oil Leaks

GROUP 23
Manual Transmission

Bulletin Number
23 01 00

Woodcliff Lake, NJ
August 2000
Service Engineering

This Service Information bulletin supersedes S.I. 23 01 00 dated March 2000.

PERFORM THE PROCEDURE OUTLINED IN THIS SERVICE INFORMATION ON ALL AFFECTED VEHICLES THE NEXT TIME THEY ARE IN THE SHOP FOR MAINTENANCE OR REPAIRS.

SUBJECT
Transmission Oil Drain Plug Leaks

MODEL
E36, E46 with manual transmission produced from 1/99 - 10/99
E39 with manual transmission produced from 4/99 - 1/00

SITUATION
The flanks of the thread on the manual transmission oil drain plugs (manufactured by Getrag) may have been incorrectly machined during production.

This could cause drops of oil to form on the oil drain plug (slight oil leak).

If the transmission oil drain plug is leaking, both the oil drain plug and oil fill plug must be replaced with plug (manufactured by Getrag) part number 23 11 7 510 100 only.

Analysis has shown that the oil filler plug manufactured by ZF, BMW part number 27 11 1 226 798, used previously in this Service Action may not fulfill its sealing function on the affected Getrag transmissions. Consequently, use of this plug (P/N 27 11 1 226 798) is no longer permitted for this Service Action and manual transmissions manufactured by Getrag.

Vehicles already retrofitted with the ZF plug (P/N 27 11 1 226 798) do not have to be dealt with again. If in an isolated case the oil filler/drain plug on an already modified vehicle should leak again this should be claimed under normal warranty, see Service Information 23 02 00

AFFECTED VEHICLES

This Service Action involves E36, E46 and E39 vehicles with manual transmissions which were produced from 1/99 - 1/00.

In order to determine if a specific vehicle is affected by this Service Action, it will be necessary to utilize the "Service Menu" of the DCS (Dealer Communication System). Based on the response of the system, either proceed with the corrective action or take no further action.

The Chassis Number Ranges shown are only for informational purposes and are not to be considered as the only deciding factor.

CORRECTION

Visually check the transmission oil drain plug for leakage on all affected vehicles.

If the transmission oil drain plug is not leaking, no further action is necessary.

If the transmission oil drain plug is leaking, both the oil drain plug and oil fill plug part number 23 11 7 510 100 must be replaced and the transmission refilled with new Lifetime transmission oil (MTF-LT-1) part number 83 22 9 408 942.

Notes:
Fill and drain plug tightening torque:
S5D 250G (5 speed) = 43 Nm (31.7lbf.ft)
S6S 420G (6 speed) = 52 Nm (38.4 lbf.ft.)

Transmission oil fill capacities:
S5D 250G (5 speed) = 1.00 liter (1.06 quarts)
S6S 420G (6 speed) = 1.75 liters (1.85 quarts)

PARTS INFORMATION

Note:
The oil filler/drain plug P/N 27 11 1 226 798 formerly used in this Service Action can be used on other manual transmissions manufactured by ZF. See the Electronic Parts Catalog for applications.

LABEL INSTRUCTIONS

This Service Action has been assigned code number 271 After the vehicle has been checked, and corrected if necessary, obtain a label (SD 92-130) and:

a. emboss your BMW dealer warranty number in the middle of the label (1);

b. punch out code number 271 printed on the label and,

c. affix the label to the B pillar as shown.

If the vehicle already has a label from a previous Service Action/Recall Campaign, affix the new label next to the old one. Do not affix one label on top of another one because a number from an underlying label could appear in the punched-out hole of the new label.

Reimbursement for this Service Action will be provided through Campaign Entry.
