Front Steering Knuckle: Service and Repair


Replacing Left Or Right Steering Knuckle

Removing bearing (wheel hub) refer to Transmission and Drivetrain.





Pull off tie rod with special tool 32 2 070.

Installation:
Replace self-locking nut.
Tightening torque, refer to Tie Rod; Specifications. Specifications






Remove guard plate.






Unscrew bolts.

Installation:
Clean tapped bores in steering knuckle. Always replace micro-encapsulated bolts.
Tightening torque, refer to Specifications.





Unscrew bolt.

Installation:
Use washers on both sides.
Replace self-locking nut.
Tightening torque, refer to Specifications.





Unscrew nut and pull off ball joint with special tool 31 2 160.
Take off steering knuckle.

Installation:
Remove grease from bore and pin.
Replace self-locking nut.
Tightening torque: 65 Nm.





Caution:
Different steering knuckles are available for vehicles with or without power steering.
Cross reference on basis of code (K):
- 787 L (left) with power steering unit
- 788 R (right) with power steering unit
- 195 L (left) without power steering unit
- 196 R (right) without power steering unit
- 357 L (left) M3
- 358 R (right) M3
