SUBJECT:
Shut-off Valve Fault Code Set in Engine Control Module (ECM/DME)
MODEL:
MZ3 - with S52 engine produced 2/98 - 9/98
Situation:
Customer complains that the "Check Engine" lamp is illuminated and the following fault is set in the Engine Control Module (ECM/DME):
FC 253 - Shut-off valve, activated charcoal filter jammed shut.
Cause:
Tank pressure sensor voltage threshold within DME program is set too high.
Correction:
The overall operation of the system should be checked and the DME reprogrammed if no faults are found in the system.
Procedure:
1. Using DIS verify that the shut-off valve is operating correctly.
-- Select "4 Expert mode"
-- Select "3 Test modules"
-- Select "60 Shutoff valve, activated charcoal filter"
2. Check that the vent line from the charcoal canister is not blocked or restricted
3. Reprogram the DME, if no other problems have been found with the system.
After successfully reprogramming the control module the following part number for a "programmed control module" will be displayed on the DME ID screen of the DIS or MODIC:

Note:
If the customer is also complaining that the engine runs rough during the first few minutes of engine operation following initial cold start then a manual determination must be performed and a specific set of part numbers must be entered. (refer to S.I. 12 02 99)
