Crankshaft: Service and Repair
(engine removed)
Remove timing case cover at bottom, refer to Timing Components, Timing Cover.
Remove all pistons, refer to Piston, Engine.
Remove rear end cover; this task is described in the section dealing with replacement of crankshaft radial seal, refer to Crankshaft Main Bearing Seal.
If the permitted end float is exceeded, check crankshaft, pilot bearing shells and engine block and replace where necessary. Axial clearance, refer to Engine Specifications.
M52 with aluminum engine block only:
Unfasten screw connection on reinforcement plates.
Unfasten screw connection on main bearing.
Remove main bearing cover (1 through 7).
Lever out crankshaft.
If necessary, unfasten increment wheel.
Installation: Replace screws. Install screws and tighten down in two passes.
Tightening Torque, refer to Engine Specifications.
Caution: Note grinding stage of crankshaft, refer to Engine, Specifications.
Replace main crankshaft bearing shells, refer to Crankshaft Main Bearing.
Replace conrod bearing shells, refer to Connecting Rod Bearing.
Replace deep-groove ball bearings in crankshaft, refer to Transmission and Drivetrain, Clutch, Manual Transmission, Pilot Bearing.
