Spoiler: Service and Repair
Rear Spoiler Gluing Instructions
General points:
The rear spoiler is glued to the rear window. In order to obtain a perfect bond, you must follow the installation procedure described below.
After installation, the rear spoiler must be secured with yellow plastic adhesive tape (sourcing reference: BMW Parts Service); the paint must therefore be completely hardened after painting work.
- In winter, the vehicles must be kept in a room with a minimum temperature of 15 °C.
When working with adhesive products (glue, cleaning agent, glass primer etc.):
- Wear protective goggles, protective gloves and, if necessary, aprons.
- Ensure rooms are well ventilated.
- Change work clothing which has been contaminated with adhesive immediately.
- Change work clothing which has been contaminated with solvents and swelling agents immediately (always keep a spare change of work clothing)
- Take skin protection precautions, provide washing facilities with hot water and use skin creams that do not contain silicone
- Keep eye baths on hand, change water regularly (once a month)
- Observe all relevant safety regulations
- Do not eat, drink or smoke in areas where PUR is being processed
Adhesive:
For gluing work, only use BMW-approved 1-component polyurethane adhesives.
- Original BMW* for cold application
- SikaTack - Ultrafast* for hot application
- Sikaflex 255 FC for cold application

The adhesive is applied to the rear spoiler with a cartridge pistol (operated by compressed air or electric power, sourcing reference: BMW Parts Service).
NOTE:
When using SikaTack - Ultrafast (hot processing):
- If necessary, open aluminum membrane at rear end of cartridge
- Heat up adhesive for one hour in cartridge oven (sourcing reference: BMW Parts Service) to 80 °C
- Remove hardened adhesive compound before further application
Sealed adhesive:
- can be heated up several times,
- may however only be stored for max. 10 hours when heated to 80 °C,
- will be damaged if this period of time is exceeded,
- cannot be used if damaged
- must be disposed of in accordance with the relevant regulations.
Adhesive expiry date:
The repair set and glue cartridges are marked with an expiry date.
The glue cannot be used after this date.
Adhesive disposal:
Pure hardened adhesive is handled as normal waste.
The adhesive is disposed of in paper bags so that it can react with moisture.
Non-hardened adhesive, cartridges and mixtures of adhesive and solvents and the like must be disposed of as special waste.
Removal of rear spoiler:
When cutting out the rear spoiler:
- Wear protective goggles and protective gloves.
The adhesive bead is cut through with a heavy-duty scalpel, if possible without damage to the rear spoiler.
To remove residual adhesive bead from rear spoiler and from rear window (if rear spoiler is to be reused):
- Use a scalpel for heavy-duty applications.
Treatment of glued area on rear spoiler:
Glue Treatment
Original BMW a) Clean with spirit (available in pharmacies).
SikaTack - Ultrafast or b) Air drying time at least 1 minute.
Sikaflex 255 FC - In event of application to residual bead, air drying time at least 15 minutes and immediate gluing, do not under any circumstances apply Sika bonding agent 206.
c) Only when residual adhesive bead has been completely removed, apply a thin coat of Sika bonding agent 206
d) Air drying time at least 10 minutes
Preparation for assembly:
Prepare plastic nozzle for shaping adhesive bead; it can be cut during the air drying times.
Treatment of rear window (outside of window):

d) Air drying time at least 10 minutes
Assembly:
CAUTION!
Assembly must be completed within 10 minutes; otherwise the cement bead will form a skin which will not be able to stick properly.
To secure the rear spoiler, only yellow plastic adhesive tape (sourcing reference: BMW Parts Service, Part Number 83 19 9 410 979) may be used.
It is absolutely essential to remove contamination by residual glue before the glue hardens using adhesive cleaner (Sika remover 208, sourcing reference: BMW Parts Service). While doing so, do not move rear spoiler again.
Hardened glue can only be removed by machine.
Hardening:
The glue hardens through reaction with air moisture at room temperature.
The minimum hardening period is achieved at 22 °C and 38% relative air humidity, refer to table.
Glues and their minimum hardening times:
Glue Minimum hardening times
SikaTack - Ultrafast (hot processing) 4 hours
Original BMW (cold processing) 9 hours
Sikaflex 255 FC (cold processing) 9 hours
