Convertible Top Deck Lid: Service and Repair

Replacing convertible top lid cover

Note:

In this series the cover of the convertible top lid is vacuum-laminated. With this process the cover is glued over its entire surface. When replacing in the case of repairs, this vacuum-laminated cover must also be used.

When pulling off the cover, a foam residue must remain on the entire surface of the convertible top lid. This residual foam needs not be removed if it does not separate at any point.

The new cover is placed on the lid and only glued on the return edge.

Make sure the vent ducts are kept free of adhesive in the area of trim strip!

When installing a replacement lid, the cover is also only glued on the return edge.

A profile rubber adhesive is used for gluing (sourcing reference: BMW Parts Service).

Note:
- Before the start of repairs, lay a wool blanket on the assembly area, to protect the paintwork of the convertible top lid from damage.
- Mark mounting on convertible top compartment cover (this eliminates the need to adjust the convertible top compartment cover).
- Unfasten screws and lay convertible top compartment cover on wool blanket.

Carefully unclip the trim strip (1) upwards.

Installation:

Replace defective clips (2) of the trim strip (1) if necessary.

Installation:

If necessary, replace defective grommets (1).

Unfasten screw (1) and remove left/right stop (2).

Unfasten expander rivet (3) and pull off left/right cover (4).

Unfasten bolts (1) and take off closing bracket (2).

Unfasten screw (1) and remove left/right stop (2).

Pull the glued convertible top lid cover (1) off the return edge (do not pull further, as otherwise the foam will partially separate from the convertible top lid).

Note:
The foam must remain on the entire surface of the convertible top lid.

Starting at the front left and right edges (1), carefully pull off the convertible top lid cover toward the center.

Pull off the entire convertible top lid cover (1). Make sure that the foam (2) remains on the entire surface of the convertible top lid.

Cut off and remove the residual foam (1) in the area of the trim strip at the inner radius with a scalpel. Completely remove any adhesive residues, while allowing the solvent to work briefly.

Use a scraper (special tool 00 9 322) to aid the removal.

Any damage to the paintwork does not need to be repaired or repainted.

Caution!
Do not block the vent holes (1) with adhesive or other material.

Position new convertible top lid cover and align.

Apply adhesive (sourcing reference: BMW Parts Service) in trim strip channel (1) and on cover. Do not apply adhesive in the area of the grommets (2).

Note:
- Allow adhesive to flash off at room temperature for 5 to 10 minutes.
- Adhesive no longer produces threads when touched with fingers.

Glue convertible top lid cover around trim strip (1) along entire length.

Pull on and align convertible top lid cover.

Apply adhesive in area of return edge (1), and on both sides of convertible top compartment cover and on convertible top lid cover.

Allow adhesive to flash off for 5 to 10 minutes.

Adhesive no longer produces threads when touched with fingers.

Glue convertible top lid cover.

Note:
- Use a hand blow dryer to be able to pull the convertible top lid cover more smoothly over the return edge (1).
- Hold at a suitable distance - do not overheat.
- Press on the convertible top lid cover in the radius areas with special tool 00 9 321 (fishbone).

Cut off overlapping convertible top lid cover with a pair of scissors or a knife.

- Mount entire convertible top lid.

Installation:

During the subsequent function check, make sure that the convertible top is folded properly and does not rub inside the convertible top compartment. Sharp PVC edges or tips must be removed if necessary.

Sharp-edged sheet-metal transitions on the sides can be taped over with film (sourcing reference: BMW Parts Service)
