Removing and installing / replacing headlining in convertible top (with folding aid for convertible top cover)
Removing and installing finisher for convertible top lock, Replacing Trim on Convertible Top Lock
Remove adhesive tape at front (down one side).
Socket Wrench Socket:
Unfasten screws with special tool 54 3 160 and remove retaining plates.
Installation:
Bores in retaining plates are offcenter. The side with dimension (A) is at lower front.
(A) = 12 mm
Unscrew bolts using special tool 54 3 160.
Remove tensioning cable (B3) and pull out through reversing lug (U5).
Caution!
The screw lug (V2) must be resecured in the same position immediately after unscrewing the tensioning cable (B3) (risk of damaging convertible top cover).
Unscrew bolts using special tool 54 3 160.
Remove tensioning cable (B2) then secure spring (F1) once again.
Note:
Note location of tensioning cable (B2) and mark where appropriate
Bend lead-seating unit downwards on tensioning cable (B1). Remove tensioning cable (B1) at top end and from changeover lugs (U1) to (U4) and spring (F1).
Knot tensioning cable (B1) to headlining to ensure it does not get lost.
Caution!
Reversing lugs (U1) to (U4) must not be unfastened (risk of damage to convertible top cover).
Installation:
Insert tensioning cable (B1) as follows: (U1), (U2), (F1), (U3), (U4)
Squeeze together new lead-seating unit (1) at distance (A) from tensioning cable (B1).
(A) = 3 mm
Remove piping (edge protection) from front.
Installation:
Center piping when fitting.
Build status up to 7/95:
Remove cap (1) from right and pull out cable fold ejector to the left.
Build status from 7/95:
Pull right cap (1) off and pull wire fold ejector (2) to left to remove.
Note:
This wire fold ejector (2) can also be fitted to build status predating 7/95.
Unfasten screws and remove headlining from rear of clamping bracket.
Installation:
The cover (4) over the rivets must be fitted (risk of damage).

2. Retaining plate (riveted to headlining)
3. Convertible top cover
4. Cover
On bracket (over rear window), lift out clip (1) in center and unfasten left/right screws (2).
Note:
Unfasten screws with reversible handle and screwdriver insert.
Build status up to 4/95:
Pull off plastic half shell with headlining from the brackets.
Build status from 4/95:
Pull front and rear plastic half shells with headlining off the brackets.
Note:
The center plastic half shell (1) cannot be unfastened until the expanding rivets (2) are released from the bracket (refer to next operation).
Unfasten left/right expanding rivets (1) from center plastic half shell (2). Pull plastic half shell (2) with headlining off center bracket.
Remove headlining from vehicle and place on a clean base.
Installation:
Note routing of tensioning cable (B2).
Only replace:
If the reversing lugs (U1 ... U4) and the tensioning springs (F1) are fitted to the tensioning cable (B1), these must be removed.
When installing the headlining, only fit the tensioning cable (B1).
Clamping cables (B2) and (B3) are sewed to the headlining.
