Replacing Headlining in Convertible Top (Electric Motor/Fully-automatic)
Removing and installing / replacing headlining in convertible top (electric motor/fully-automatic)
Version without handle recess on finisher strip:

Version with handle recess on finisher strip:
Removing and installing finisher on convertible top lock, Replacing Finisher on Convertible Top Lock (Electric Motor/Fully-automatic)
Unfasten screws (1) with special tool 54 3 160, unfasten and remove left/right headliner reinforcement.
Clamping cable (B1):
Bend lead-seating unit downwards on tensioning cable (B1).
Remove tensioning cable (B1) at top end and from changeover lugs (U1) to (U4) and spring (F1).
Knot tensioning cable (B1) to headlining to ensure it does not get lost.
Caution!
Reversing lugs (U1) to (U4) must not be unfastened (risk of damage to convertible top cover).
Caution!
- If a new tensioning cable (B1) is used from the repair kit (Sourcing Reference: BMW Parts Service), it must be cut to size for installation in the fully-automatic EM convertible top.
- Shorten total length by 12 mm and seal tensioning cable to prevent fraying.
Note:
Total length of 671 mm (with 30 N pretensioned).
Installation sequence for tensioning cable (B1):
Insert tensioning cable (B1) as follows (starting from top headliner mount (1)):
- from front (2) to back (3) through (U1)
- from top (4) to bottom (5) through (U2)
- from outside (6) to inside (7) through (F1)
- from bottom (8) to top (9) through (U3)
- from back (10) to front (11) through (U4)
- from back (12) to front through lower headliner mount (13)
- squeeze together new lead-seating unit (P) with distance (A) on bottom of tensioning cable (B1)
- distance (A) = 3 mm
Clamping cable (B3):
Unfasten screw with special tool 54 3 160, unfasten and remove screw lug (V1).
- Remove tensioning cable (B3) and pull out through reversing lug (U5).
Installation:
Fit tensioning cable (B2) to screw lug (V1) and screw down with screw (1) to convertible top linkage.
Clamping cable (B2):
- Unscrew bolts using special tool 54 3 160.
- Remove tensioning cable (B2) and spring (F1).
Installation:
- Do not secure tensioning cable (B2) until after tensioning cable (B1) is fitted due to shrink-fit hose on spring (F1).
- Note routing of tensioning cable (B2).
- Secure tensioning cable (B2) with screw (1) and spring (F1).
Only version without handle recess on finisher strip:
- Pull wedges (edge protectors) out of center and out of left/right connections (1).
Installation:
Replacement only (headliner):
- The repair kit "Finisher strip on soft top frame (retaining bracket)" must be installed, Replacing Finisher on Convertible Top Lock (Electric Motor/Fully-automatic)
Pull right cap (1) off and pull wire fold ejector (2) to left to remove.
Installation:
Route cable (1) between wire fold ejector (2) and clamping belt (3).
Unfasten screws and remove headlining from rear of clamping bracket.
1. Roof liner
2. Retaining plate (riveted to headlining)
3. Convertible top cover
On bracket (over rear window), lift out clip (1) in center and unfasten left/right screws (2).
Note:
- Unfasten screws (2) with reversible handle and screwdriver insert.
For the version with a metal bow (above rear window), position (1) is also a screw, but with a washer.
Pull front and rear plastic half shells off brackets with headliner.
Note:
The center plastic half shell (1) cannot be unfastened until the expanding rivets (2) are released from the bracket (refer to next operation).
Unfasten left/right expanding rivets (1) from center plastic half shell (2). Pull plastic half shell (2) with headliner off center bracket. Remove headlining from vehicle and place on a clean base.
Only replace:
Unfasten lead-seating unit (1), then remove changeover lugs (U1, U3, U4) and clamping springs (F1) from tensioning cable (B1). When installing the headlining, only fit the tensioning cable (B1).
