Removing And Installing Steering Wheel With Airbag

CAUTION:
Comply with safety precautions!
Incorrect handling can activate airbag and result in injury.
Disconnect battery and cover negative pole or terminal.





- Unscrew screw.
- Pull lower section of steering-column casing off upper section.

Installation Note:
- Check for correct position of lock.





- Pull (orange) plug-in connection out of holder on steering column and disconnect.





- Remove screws (Torx T 30 socket).
- Tightening Torque: 8 Nm (6 ft lbs).

Installation Note:
- First tighten screws on right-hand side in forward direction.
- Do not pinch wires.





- Pull off connector and remove airbag unit.

CAUTION:
Airbag unit must always be laid to one side (in luggage compartment) with impact pad facing upwards.





- Turn steering wheel to straight-ahead position (markings on steering gear and steering spindle aligned).
- Unscrew nut or bolt.

Installation Note:
Tightening Torque:
Nut 80 Nm (59 ft lbs).
Bolt 63 Nm (46 ft lbs).

- Mark position of steering wheel relative to steering spindle. Pull off steering wheel.





Note:
Loosening bolt activates spring clip (1) which holds contact ring in center position.





Installation Note:
- Lockpin (1) must engage in opening (2) of contact ring.





Adjust contact ring if necessary:
- Press down spring (1).
- Turn contact clockwise or counterclockwise as far as stop.
- Turn back about 3 turns until arrows for center position are aligned.
- Release spring (1).





Installation Note:
- Coat slip ring with lubricant.
