General Information:

With the introduction of the 1996 model year a new emissions monitoring system (OBD II) was introduced. OBD II requires that all systems/components that can affect emissions be monitored and that the "Check Engine" lamp be illuminated whenever such a fault occurs. The enclosed On-Board Diagnostics II publication provides information on the following:

Also enclosed with this publication is a partial listing of fault codes and an explanation of why a particular fault may set with the MS 41.1, MS 41.2, M5.2 or M5.2.1 Engine Management Systems. The fault code information provided is only a supplement to the normal DIS diagnostics and test modules.

This publication is being distributed to Service Managers as a reference source for all diagnostic technicians working on OBD related issues. All technicians will receive a copy of this publication when attending the On-Board Diagnostics II (ST060) technical training course. The enclosed manual is not a substitute for the course, as the course provides two days of in-depth system explanations plus hands-on troubleshooting of the various systems and various diagnostic tools/methods.
