SUBJECT:
Coolant Temperature Gauge Reads High under Normal Operating Conditions

MODEL:
M roadster (E36/7) All vehicles produced, to June 1, 1998

Situation:

Under normal operating conditions, the pointer on the coolant gauge reads between mid-point, and the mark above mid-point. The problem is corrected from VIN LC86503.

Cause:

Coding error during vehicle assembly.

Correction:

DO NOT REPLACE INSTRUMENT CLUSTER OR ANY OTHER COMPONENTS - THIS WILL NOT CORRECT THE PROBLEM

Recode instrument cluster using DIS CD version 14.0. or later (available July 1998), as follows:

Select - Coding/Programming/ZCS Coding/E36/Recoding/Kombi, and then follow on-screen prompts to complete the recoding process.

In case of a customer complaint prior to the release of CD Version 14.0, reassure customer that this is a gauge problem, and not an engine overheating problem.
