Fluid Pan: Service and Repair

REMOVING AND INSTALLING/SEALING OIL SUMP
- Drain oil.

- Unscrew oil sump.
- Take off gasket.

- Clean sump.
- Place magnets in oil sump.
- Replace gasket.
- Reinstall sump. Tighten bolts 6-7 Nm (4.5 to 5.2 ftlbs).

NOTE: Mount holders with straight arm on sides and curved holders at front and rear of sump.

Filling Transmission After Repair Or Service
- Engine "Off"
- Open oil filler plug (1)
- Fill transmission through filler bore (1) underneath the sump until it overflows.
- Reinstall filler plug and tighten.
- With the selector lever in park, start the engine.
- Remove the oil filler plug again, add oil until it overflows and reinstall the oil filler plug.
- Check oil level as detailed below.

NOTE: Approx. oil change volume 3.3 ltr. (3.5 qts.)
Total oil volume (torque convert drained) 7.8 ltr. (8.1 qts.).

NOTE: This transmission is equipped with a lifetime fluid and does not require replacement under normal circumstances. In the event that repairs must be made to this transmission, Esso LT 71141 must be used.

CAUTION: Mixing this oil with other grades of ATF will cause the automatic transmission to malfunction and is not permitted.

Check Oil Level/Adjust

This procedure should be performed quickly in order to adhere to the temperature requirements.

- The vehicle must be without load and standing on a flat, level surface
- Run engine at idle speed
- Switch on lights to increase engine speed
- Read off temperature with MoDIC, Service Tester or equivalent equipment

NOTE:
At the start of the oil level check, the transmission temperature must be between 20 and 30°C (68 and 86°F). It is always preferable to start the the oil level check at 20°C (68°F) and be prepared to reinstall the oil filler plug at 30°C (86°F) if possible. The inspection should therefore be completed at 30°C (86°F).
The transmission will hold about 0.6 liters (0.65 qt.) more oil than when the oil level is checked at 50°C (111°F). When the check is complete, the transmission temperature must not exceed 50°C (111°F).

CAUTION: If the oil temperature rises above 50°C (111°F) during the checking procedure, the resulting oil level will be tool low.

- With the engine running (idle speed; apply brake), slowly shift up and down all gears in program (winter program)
- Move selector lever into position "P", then unscrew and remove oil filler plug (1) with engine running.
- Oil should spill from the fill bore.

NOTE: Some oil will always be trapped above the plug and run out when the plug is removed: this is not an indication of proper filling or overfilling.

WARNING: If oil temperature is allowed to rise above specified temperature, scalding may occur.

- If necessary fill transmission through filler bore (1) underneath the sump until it overflows.
- With engine running, screw oil filler plug back in and tighten to 100 Nm (74 ft lb).

CAUTION: If there is a suction sound during the fill-up procedure, air is being sucked in at the oil pick-up. This causes foaming and an incorrect oil level will result. Stop the engine and wait a few hours for the oil to settle down.
