SUBJECT:
Whining Noise during CD Operation

MODEL:
3 Series (E36) - 2 door vehicles produced 10/95 thru 10/96 (except 318ti, E36 convertible & Z3)

Situation:

A whining noise from the alternator may be heard through the sound system during CD operation, especially during silent portions of the CD (such as between two songs) or during soft passages of a selection. This whining noise will increase in volume and frequency in proportion to engine speed.

A modified ground connection will be introduced in production as of 10/96.

Cause:

Impaired ground connection for CD Changer.

Correction:

Modify the ground connection of the CD Changer, by providing a direct connection between Pin 1 of Connector X1892 and the CD mounting bracket, either on a customer complaint basis or whenever installing a new CD Changer into a two-door E36 vehicle produced between 10/95 through 9/96.

Procedure:

1. Remove the CD Changer bracket (do not remove the Changer from the bracket).

2. Disconnect X1892.

3. Carefully open the harness and locate the brown wire. Cut this wire at a point 25 cm (10 inches) from the plug.

4. Crimp an eyelet (Part Number 61 13 8 353 763) on the end of the brown wire connected to X1892.

5. Reconnect X1892 to the CD Changer and reinstall the CD Changer and its bracket, attaching the eyelet to one of the upper bracket mounting screws.
