YOU SHOULD PERFORM THE PROCEDURE OUTLINED IN THIS SERVICE INFORMATION BULLETIN WHENEVER AN AFFECTED VEHICLE IS IN THE SHOP FOR MAINTENANCE OR REPAIR.
SUBJECT:
Backrest Pivot Service Action
MODELS:
E34
Situation:
Some 1995 E34s produced in March 1995 were manufactured with front seat backrest pivots that are at the upper limits of lateral clearance. This clearance could cause a side to side movement or rattle in the backrest under certain conditions.
In order to prevent unnecessary customer complaints, BMW will perform a Service Action on all affected vehicles to install a bushing kit that reduces the lateral clearance.
Vehicles Affected:
This Service Action affects all E34s except those with sports seats, produced from March 9 to March 17, 1995.
In order to determine if a specific vehicle is affected by this Recall, it will be necessary to utilize the "Service Menu" of the DCS (Dealer Communications System). Based on the response of the system, either proceed with the corrective action or take no further action.
The Chassis Number Ranges listed below are only for informational purposes and are not to be considered as the only deciding factor.

^ Remove both front seats.
^ Remove trim panels from both sides of the seats to expose the recliner arms.
^ Center punch each backrest pivot (2), using a bushing from the kit as a centering guide.
^ Drill a 5 mm hole approximately 20 mm deep in each backrest pivot. Use of a cobalt drill is recommended.
^ Tap the holes with a 6 x 1.0 tap, and clean up any metal shavings.
^ Install bushings and screws from parts kit, and tighten to 10 +/- 2 Nm.
^ Reinstall trim panels and reinstall seats. Tighten seat belt anchors to 48 Nm. and seat mounts to 44 Nm.
