Electronic Immobilization System (EWS II) - Parts Information

GENERAL INFORMATION:
A new BMW Drive-Away Protection System was phased into production during January and February 1995 for all vehicles. This new system is known as the Electronic Immobilization System. For further information on this system, refer to S.I. 61 01 95 (4151) and to T.R.I. 61 01 95 (2144).
All Service Department personnel must be fully informed as to the special restrictions concerning replacement parts for the EWS II System, and the procedures for ordering them. Please ensure that all members of your Service Department review the contents of this S.I. bulletin, and the S.I. and T.R.I. bulletins mentioned above.
PARTS INFORMATION:
Due to the VIN-specific electronic coding of vehicle keys and EWS II Control Modules, BMW of North America, Inc. will not be able to supply cut keys or initialized EWS II Control Modules from our Parts Distribution Centers at this time. Currently, keys or initialized EWS II Control Modules must be ordered from BMW AG using the attached order form. Normal lead times for Direct Shipment orders will apply to these orders. Due to system security requirements, all information on the order form must be completed; otherwise the order will not be processed. This requirement will be strictly enforced. Please note the rapifax number at the top of the order form.
The Dealer Communication System (DCS) and BMW Regional Offices will not be able to supply key code or EWS II Control Module coding information for these vehicles. These keys and EWS II Control Modules will not function in the vehicles without electronic encoding and initialization to the specific vehicle; consequently, dealers will also not be able to cut keys or use the MoDiC for initialization of the EWS II Control Modules.
Extra care should be taken to ensure that keys which are delivered with these vehicles from the Vehicle Preparation Centers are not lost. Each - vehicle will come with four keys which are encoded to the vehicle's EWS II Control Module. If one (or more) of the keys is lost prior to the retail delivery
of the vehicle, the EWS II Control Module and all four keys must be replaced at the dealer's expense. Loss of keys is not covered under warranty, and the issuance of replacement key(s) uses up one or more of the six replacement key data sets assigned to the EWS II Control Module. This would result in delivery to the customer of a vehicle which did not have the possibility of receiving all six replacement keys (refer to S.I. 61 01 95 (4151) for further details).
Parts used as replacements for EWS II components cannot be sold to over-the-counter customers. Permission to install these parts is exclusively granted to authorized BMW workshops only. All packaging of these parts will contain a notice to this effect. The following EWS II components will be available as spare parts:
^ Transponder key, already fully initialized
^ EWS II Control Module, already fully initialized
^ Complete one-key system, already fully initialized
^ Lock cylinder, mechanically coded to existing key
^ Lock cylinder coded to existing key code or with arbitrary key encoding, including keys without transponder for doors, glove compartment and trunk
^ Transceiver Module
^ Ring antenna on steering wheel lock
