SUBJECT:
Recall Campaign 95V-071
MODELS:
318i Convertible
Situation:
BMW has determined that certain 1994-95 model year 318iC and 318iCA automobiles fail to conform to Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) No. 110, Tire Selection and Rims.
The noncompliance involves the tire information placard required by FMVSS No. 110. The vehicle capacity weight and designated seating capacity on the placard are overstated.
Vehicles Affected:
This Recall Campaign affects all 1994 and 1995 model year 318iC and 318iCAs produced from 1/94 through 3/95.
In order to determine if a specific vehicle within the chassis ranges below is affected by this Recall Campaign, it will be necessary to visually check the tire information placard on the "B" pillar.
The revised placards can be identified by the model information and the part number in the right-hand margin of the placard. The model information on the revised placard reads "BMW 318iC USA" and the part number is 2 12 514.
The Chassis Number Ranges listed below are only for informational purposes and are not to be considered as the only deciding factor. The affected vehicles are limited to vehicles within these ranges but not all of these vehicles are affected by the Recall Campaign.
Under the National Traffic and Motor Vehicle Safety Act of 1966, as amended, if there has been a recall campaign, dealers must assure that all new vehicles and new items of replacement equipment are free of safety defects and comply with all applicable Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards at the time of delivery to the consumer. This means that dealers may not deliver new motor vehicles or new items of replacement equipment unless the safety defect or noncompliance has remedied before delivery.
Model Chassis Number Ranges
318iC EC82000 - EC84879
318iCA ED15000 - ED17788
Correction:
The repair consists of placing a revised placard over the existing placard. Each owner of an affected car will receive a notification letter and a replacement placard. The owner can either install the new placard, or request that it be installed by your dealership, per the following instructions:
^ Wipe the existing placard on the "B" pillar clean.
^ Remove the paper backing from the revised placard.
^ Carefully apply the revised placard over the existing placard.
Parts Information:
A placard will be included in each customer notification letter, and a supply will be sent to each dealer along with one copy of this bulletin. Additional placards may be ordered as needed from the Environmental Engineering Department.
