SUBJECT:
Installation of Approved Accessory Wheels and Tires
MODEL:
95 Model Year and Later E36 4 Cylinder Models Except Z3
Situation:
When installing approved accessory wheels with 225/45 ZR 17 or 235/40 ZR 17 tires on 95 model year and later E36 4 cylinder models, it may be necessary to make some body modifications to ensure adequate tire to body clearance under all driving conditions.
Note:
Refer to S.I. 36 01 96 for 95 and 96 model year approvals and S.I. 36 01 97 for 97 mode year approvals.
Procedure:
Perform the following modifications as necessary depending on the model and tire application.
All cars produced prior to 1/96 should have the gravel shield in the right rear wheel house replaced with the later style shield, part number 16 13 2 227 852.
When installing 225/45 ZR 17 tires on a 318ti, the left rear wheel house must be slightly modified.
Remove the wheel and use a plastic or rubber hammer to bend in the body flange slightly as illustrated. A=90mm.
When installing 225/45 ZR 17 tires on a 318i, 318iS, or a 318iC, or 235/40 ZR 17 tires on a 318i, both wheel openings must be slightly modified.
Remove rear wheels and use a plastic or rubber hammer to bend the inner lip of the wheel openings approximately 5 mm outward in the area indicated by A.
After bending any sheet metal the affected area should be checked for damage to the corrosion protection, and touched up as necessary.
