YOU SHOULD PERFORM THE PROCEDURE OUTLINED IN THIS SERVICE INFORMATION BULLETIN WHENEVER AN AFFECTED VEHICLE IS IN THE SHOP FOR MAINTENANCE OR REPAIR.
SUBJECT:
Battery Service Action
MODELS:
E36 Convertible
Situation:
The batteries installed in 1995 E36 Convertibles for a three-week period in February and March of 1995 may have a defect that could lead to a short battery service life.
In the interest of customer satisfaction, BMW has decided to perform a Service Action to replace any affected batteries before they have a chance to fail.
Vehicles Affected:
This Service Action affects all E36 Convertibles produced in the last two weeks of February and the first week of March 1995.
In order to determine if a specific vehicle is affected by this Service Action, it will be necessary to utilize the Service Menu" of the DCS (Dealer Communications System). Based on the response of the system, either proceed with the corrective action or take no further action.
The Chassis Number Ranges listed below are only for informational purposes and are not to be considered as the only deciding factor.
Model Chassis Number Ranges
318i Convertible EC84570 - EC84675
318iA Convertible ED17480 - ED17578
325i Convertible JC82945 - JC83092
325iA Convertible JD41168 - JD41468
Correction:
Check the date code stamped on the negative post of the battery.
If the date code reads "07/95", replace the battery. If the date code does not read "07/95", no further action is required.
Service Action Label Instructions:
This Service Action is assigned code number 143. After the vehicle is checked, and corrected if necessary, obtain a label (SD 92-050) and:
a) Emboss your BMW dealer warranty number in the middle of the label (1).
b) Punch out code number 143 printed on the label (2).
c) Bend the label to crease an edge and remove the backing paper. Then affix the label to the B pillar as shown:
If the vehicle already has a label from a previous Service Action/Recall Campaign, affix the label next to the old one. Do not affix one label on top of another one because a number from an underlying label could appear in the punched-out hole of the new label.
Warranty Status:
Reimbursement for this Service Action will be via Campaign Entry.
