Procedure

Vehicles from 9/98, code a replacement Instrument Cluster, use either the DIS or MoDiC as follows:

1. Select "Coding/Programming".

2. Select "E36".

3. Follow on-screen instructions.

Note:
Instrument clusters installed on vehicles produced before 9/98 are not codeable.

To access "Test functions":

1. Switch OFF ignition.

2. Press and hold Reset button, switch ON ignition, release Reset button, and "TEST 1." will be displayed.

3. Repeatedly press the Reset button to advance to "tESt 19".

4. At "tESt 19.", the display will cycle between "L-on" (Lock-on), and "L-off" (Lock-off). To access "Test functions", press the Reset button when "L-off" is displayed.

5. Press the Reset button to advance to and display, any "Test function"

To put out the red manipulation dot where either a replacement Instrument Cluster or a replacement Coding Plug has been installed:

1. Access "Test functions" as described above.

2. Access "tESt 16.0". Momentarily wait for the display to show the sub-menu, then press the Reset button to advance to "tESt 16.1".

3. Press the Reset button momentarily, and mileage will be transferred between the Coding Plug and the internal EEPROM in the Instrument Cluster, and the red manipulation dot will go out. Note: The red manipulation dot will reappear if the battery is disconnected and reconnected before the replacement instrument cluster has accumulated a minimum of (2) miles of driving. In this case, the mileage transfer operation will have to be repeated.
