Headliner Gets Caught by Storage Lid Cover

MODELS:
E36 Convertible

Situation:
The soft top headliner on E36 convertibles built prior to 7/94 may get caught between the body and storage lid cover when opening the top. This is caused by the headliner folding assist rod exerting insufficient force on the headliner to allow it to fold properly.

A new, stronger rod was introduced into production in July 1994 to ensure that the headliner folds properly when going into the storage well.

Correction:
In case of customer complaint, replace the folding assist rod with part number 54 31 8 203 869.

Unlatch the top to release the pressure on the headliner, and slide the old rod out of its pocket in the headliner. Slide the new rod into the pocket, and make sure that it goes through the fabric loop on the far right side of the headliner.
