Please remove and discard S.I. 12 04 94 (4030), dated August 1994 from your S.I. binder (whether it is filed in Group 12 or Group 61). Please file this copy, dated September 1994, in Group 12 of your S.I. binder.

THE PROCEDURE OUTLINED IN THIS SERVICE INFORMATION BULLETIN SHOULD BE PERFORMED ON ALL AFFECTED VEHICLES THE NEXT TIME SUCH VEHICLE IS IN THE SHOP FOR MAINTENANCE OR REPAIRS.

SUBJECT:
B+ Lead Rubs Against Fuel Return Line

MODELS:
7 Series (E32) with M60 Engine

Situation:

If the metal fuel return line is not correctly routed through a clip on the engine compartment bulkhead, it can contact and rub against the B+ lead.

Should the B+ lead contact the fuel return line when the temperatures are high in the engine compartment, the insulation of the B+ lead could be damaged.

Vehicles Affected:

This Service Action involves 7 Series (E32) vehicles, equipped with M60 engine, produced prior to March 1993.

In order to determine if a specific vehicle is affected by this Service Action, it will be necessary to utilize the "Service Menu" of the DCS (Dealer Communication System). Proceed to "Inquiries;" "Vehicle History" and enter the chassis number (last seven characters) of the vehicle in question. Based on the response of the system, either proceed with the corrective action or take no further action.

The Chassis Number Ranges listed below are only for informational purposes and are not to be considered as the only deciding factor. The affected vehicles are limited to vehicles within these ranges but not all of these vehicles are affected by the Service Action. The final decision is the DCS inquiry.

Model Chassis Number Ranges

740iA DE 60000 - DE 63025
740iLA DE 83002 - DE 85485

Correction:

When an affected vehicle (identified by DCS inquiry) is next in the workshop, check that the fuel return line is securely routed in the clip on the engine compartment bulkhead. This clip is located on the engine compartment bulkhead slightly inboard of the bottom of the E-Box. If not secured, press the metal line into the clip as per the preceding illustration. Check the insulation of the B+ lead for damage, and repair the insulation if necessary.

Note:

Do not confuse the metal fuel return line with the much smaller metal brake line, also secured to the engine compartment bulkhead with a plastic clip.

Service Action Label Instructions: This Service Action has been assigned code number 114. After the vehicle has been checked, and corrected if necessary, obtain a label (SD 92-031) and:

a) emboss your BMW dealer warranty number in the middle of the label (1);
b) punch out code number 114 printed on the label (2); and,

c) bend the label to crease an edge and remove the backing paper. Then affix the label to the B pillar as shown:

If the vehicle already has a label from a previous Service Action/Recall Campaign, affix the new label next to the old one. Do not affix one label on top of another one, because a number from an underlying label could appear in the punched-out hole of the new label.

Warranty Information:

Covered under the terms of the BMW New Car Limited Warranty of 4 Years/50,000 Miles.

Reimbursement for this Service Action will be provided through Campaign Entry.
