SUBJECT:
Long Cranking - Engine Hot
MODELS:
E38 with M60 Engine
SITUATION:
Engine may crank up to 20 seconds before starting during hot restart on vehicles produced from 9/94-12/94.
CAUSE:
A fuel pressure drop in the fuel feed side of the system is caused due to an internal leak in the fuel pump check valve which allows fuel to bleed back to the tank when the engine is switched off.
CORRECTION:
If a long cranking complaint is received on E38 (M60) vehicles, an inline check valve kit, P/N 16 149068988, should be installed as outlined below.
PROCEDURE: Remove rear seat bench.
- Unfasten rubber grommet, cut insulating mat along perforated line and fold open. Remove metal cover and disconnect electrical connector plug from fuel pump. (See repair manual group 16.)
- Crank/start the engine with the fuel pump plug disconnected. This will reduce the pressure in the fuel lines and hoses. Switch off ignition.
- Install 8 caps included in check valve kit on M6 nuts as per illustration.
- Carefully remove the feed fuel hose from fuel pump cover.
Caution:
Residual fuel pressure may be present in the fuel hose.
- Connect inline check valve and hose from the kit between the fuel pump cover and the vehicle's original feed fuel hose using the hose damps supplied assuring a kink free loop is made as shown in the previous illustration.
- Reconnect the fuel pump connector and start the engine. Check for fuel leaks.
- Reinstall metal cover, insulating mat and rubber grommet.
- Reinstall rear seat bench.
