THE PROCEDURE OUTLINED IN THIS SERVICE INFORMATION BULLETIN SHOULD BE PERFORMED ON ALL AFFECTED VEHICLES THE NEXT TIME SUCH VEHICLE IS IN THE SHOP FOR MAINTENANCE OR REPAIRS.

SUBJECT:
Oil Pump Sprocket Cover

MODELS:
530i/iT, 740i, 840i

Situation:
A plastic cover was phased into M60 engine production which is mounted over the oil pump drive sprocket using an interference fit. Under certain operating conditions (i.e., high engine temperatures) the cover may come loose and fall into the oil sump causing engine damage.

Vehicles Affected:
This Service Action involves E31, E32 and E34 vehicles with M60 engines which were produced in 3/94.

In order to determine if a specific vehicle is affected by this Service Action, it will be necessary to utilize the "Service Menu" of the DCS (Dealer Communication System). Proceed to "Inquiries;" "Vehicle History" and enter the chassis number (last seven characters) of the vehicle in question. Based on the response of the system, either proceed with the corrective action or take no further action.

The Chassis Number Ranges listed below are only for informational purposes and are not to be considered as the only deciding factor. The affected vehicles are limited to vehicles within these ranges but not all of these vehicles are affected by the Service Action. The final decision is the DCS inquiry.

Correction:
The oil pump sprocket cover must be removed on all affected vehicles.

Procedure:
- Remove lower oil pan (see appropriate repair manual for the removal, and installation of the lower oil pan section in Group 11.).

Note:
The engine oil must be drained in a clean drain pan and should be reused after the repair is completed.

- Remove the oil pump sprocket cover and discard.

- Reinstall lower oil pan with new gasket.

- Refill engine oil and top up if necessary.

Instructions:

a) emboss your BMW dealer warranty number in the middle of the label (1);

b) punch out code number 119 printed on the label (2); and,

c) bend the label to crease an edge and remove the backing paper. Then affix the label to the B pillar as shown:

If the vehicle already has a label from a previous Service Action/Recall Campaign, affix the new label next to the old one. Do not affix one label on top of another one because a number from an underlying label could appear in the punched-out hole of the new label.
