SUBJECT:
New Lower Oil Pan Gasket
MODEL:
All with M60 and M62 Engines
Situation:
A new style lower oil pan gasket has been phased into production approximately mid September 1996.
The new metal carrier gasket replaces the early style cork gasket and should be used any time a gasket replacement becomes necessary.
Also, if you observe an oil pan gasket leakage or one or more oil pan bolts backed out either in conjunction with a customer complaint or during a workshop visit, the cork style lower oil pan gasket should be replaced with the new style metal carrier gasket.
Procedure:
Remove the lower engine splash guard
Drain the engine oil.
Disconnect the oil level switch connector
Remove the lower oil pan bolts and pan.
Note:
Clean the sealing surfaces and replace the gasket. Do not reuse the old gasket.
Install two M6 studs (1) and (2) hand tight in the upper oil pan as shown. This will center the oil pan and gasket during assembly and prevent damage to the rubber sealing edge due to shifting / sliding when installing the oil pan bolts.
Install the steel carrier oil pan gasket and lower oil pan.
Install all of the oil pan bolts and tighten.
Tightening torque = 10 Nm. (7.5 lb.ft.).
Remove the two M6 studs (1) and (2) an install and tighten the last two oil pan bolts.
Tightening torque = 10 Nm. (7.5 lb.ft.).
Reconnect the oil level switch connector.
Reinstall the lower engine splash guard.
Refill engine oil.
