Removing and Installing Complete Propeller Shaft

- Remove exhaust assembly.

- Unscrew heat shield.

Note: The propeller shaft is adapted to pertinent requirements in reverence to the transmission version, power flow and vibration behavior, so that removal and installation will differ and depend on the version.

Version with Front Joint Disc:
Unscrew propeller shaft on transmission.

Installation:
Replace stop nuts.
Tightening torque 81 Nm (60 ft.lbs).

Important! Only tighten nuts or bolts on the flange end whenever possible be design to avoid tension in the joint disc.

Version with Front Universal Joint:
Support transmission with Special Tools 24 0 120 and 00 2 020.
Unscrew transmission suspension.

Unscrew universal joint on transmission.

Installation:
Replace stop nuts.
Tightening torque 64 Nm (47 ft.lbs).

- Unscrew propeller shaft on final drive.

Installation:
Check gasket, replacing it necessary.

Important! The constant velocity joint is not encapsulated.

Protect joint against dirt with a transporting cap or something similar. Check the grease filling.

Installation:
Replace stop nuts.
Tightening torque 64 Nm (47 ft.lbs).

- Unscrew center mount.

Installation:
Preload center mount parallel in forward direction.
Preload A = 2 to 4 mm (0.079 to 0.157").
Tightening torque 21 Nm (15.5 ft.lbs).

- Bend propeller shaft down and pull it out of centering pin on the transmission.

Caution! Never disconnect propeller shaft at the slide. A propeller shaft is balanced in assembled state and may only be replaced complete.

Note: Propeller shaft sections are mounted in such a manner that universal joints are in one plane.

If the slide is disassembled erroneously without marking, wrong installation of only 180° Is possible because of the balancing.

Important!
Never let a propeller shaft fall into the joints.
This would damage the rubber cover on the constant velocity joint in particular.

Installation:
Check center, lubricating It with Molykote Long-term 2 if necessary.
Replace a damaged center.
