Fluid Pan: Service and Repair
REMOVING AND INSTALLING/SEALING BOTH OIL SUMPS
- Drain oil.
- Unscrew oil sumps.
- Take off gaskets.
- Remove remainders of gaskets with a gasket remover.
- Apply self-adhesive gaskets for oil sumps.
- Place magnet in oil sump for main case.
NOTE: Magnet location in large oil sump.
- Mount and bolt both oil sumps.
- First tighten bolts slightly diagonally and then again to final torque diagonally to 10 - 13 Nm (7.5 - 9.5 ftlbs.).
CAUTION: Bolts are micro-encapsulated and must be replaced after each removal. Only use bolts with M-threads.
Refilling/Checking Oil Level
- Unscrew filler plug (1) on the lower side of the oil pan.
NOTE: Approx. oil change volume 3.0 ltr. (3.2 qts.)
Total oil volume (torque convert drained) 8.8 ltr. (9.1 qts.)
- Car must be unladen and standing on a level surface.
- Hang filler (2) in filler opening.
- Add ATF until it overflows filler plug opening and reinstall filler plug.
- Start engine and run at idle speed in selector lever setting "P" or "N".
- Read off temperature with MoDIC, Service Tester or equivalent equipment.
- With the engine running (idle speed; apply brake), slowly shift up and down all gears in program (winter program)
- With the temperature between 30 - 55°C (86 and 121°F) and shift lever in position "P", remove filler plug and check ATF fluid level. Oil should be level with bottom of fill hole. Add if necessary.
WARNING: If oil temperature is allowed to rise above specified temperature, scalding may occur.
- Screw in and tighten filler plug (1) 25 to 40 Nm (18 to 29 ft lb).
NOTE: ATF level too high: Strong foaming, loss through splashing, high temperature when driving fast. Fluid loss through vent.
NOTE: ATF level too low: Valve rattle, foaming, transmission slip. General operating disturbances.
