PLEASE REMOVE AND DISCARD S.I. 65 01 95 (4167) DATED OCTOBER 1995. YOU SHOULD PERFORM THE PROCEDURE OUTLINED IN THIS SERVICE INFORMATION BULLETIN WHENEVER AN AFFECTED VEHICLE IS IN THE SHOP FOR MAINTENANCE OR REPAIR.

SUBJECT:
Improperly Seated Auxiliary Turn Signal Grommet - Failure of Cruise Control Module

MODELS:
1994 MY E34 (3/94 - 6/94 production)

Situation:
The rubber grommet for the driver's side turn signal lamp wiring may not be fully seated, allowing moisture to run along the lamp wiring and collect around the wiring of the cruise control module. The connector on the cruise control module was not designed to be water-tight, and long term exposure to higher levels of moisture may cause damage to internal components in the control module, and subsequent failure of the cruise control.

Vehicles Affected:
In order to determine if a specific vehicle is affected by this Service Action, it will be necessary to utilize the "Service Menu" of the DCS (Dealer Communications System). Based on the response of the system, either proceed with the corrective action or take no further action.

The Chassis Number Ranges listed are only for informational purposes and are not to be considered as the only deciding factor.

Correction:
Remove auxiliary turn signal lamps and inspect seating of wiring grommet on inner sheet metal. Correct if necessary, and examine cruise control module for evidence of moisture damage. Replace module if necessary.

Procedure:

1. Remove the auxiliary turn signal lamps from both sides of the vehicle. Using a flashlight, examine the inner sheet metal wiring grommet to ascertain if the grommet has been seated properly. Reinstall the auxiliary turn signal lamp assemblies. If the grommet on either side of the vehicle is not seated properly, proceed with the appropriate steps on the side(s) where the grommet was not fully seated.

2. Driver's Side Only - Remove the 7 mm screw holding the hood latch release lever, the small metal bushing, and pull of the lever.

3. Driver's Side & Passenger Side - Remove the plastic quarter turn fasteners holding the footwell speaker trim/deadpedal in place. Note that there is one fastener in the side of the dead pedal on the driver's side.

4. Driver's Side & Passenger Side - Disconnect the radio and telephone wires from the loudspeaker, noting where each color wire is connected.

5. Driver's Side & Passenger Side - Pull back the speaker insulation cup to expose the lower A-pillar area.

6. Driver's Side & Passenger's Side - Check the grommet for the lamp wiring. Refer to the illustration. It may be necessary to cut away some of the sound deadening material near the grommet in order to make certain the grommet is fully seated. Note that the entire circumference of the grommet must be fully seated in order to prevent water entry.

7. If the driver's side grommet requires adjustment, examine the cruise control module for evidence of water entry. Pull the module out and disconnect the connector. If the cruise control module exhibits evidence of moisture damage, it must be replaced.

This Service Action has been assigned code number 132 After the vehicle has been checked, and corrected if necessary, obtain a label (SD 92-050) and:
