SUBJECT:
525i Touring
The first station wagon to be offered by BMW in the North American market is the 525i Touring. The design of the 525i Touring is an extension of the BMW sports sedan concept with the additional versatility of a wagon.
The Touring shares the same basic body structure as the sedan, with the only changed exterior dimension being the height, where the touring is 5 mm higher. From the B-pillars back, the Touring incorporates all new body panels. The rear doors and windows have been reshaped, and the rear light assemblies are larger and wrap further around into the quarter panels.
The Touring drive train is identical to the 525iA, and will only be available with an automatic transmission.
FEATURES:
The 525i Touring incorporates a number of features new to the BMW line in the U.S.
- Multi-function tailgate: Access to the rear compartment is obtained by opening either the back window or the entire tailgate assembly. The separate operating latches are located in the overhang of the license plate recess. To open the entire gate assembly, use the latch in the center of the recess. To open the window only, use the latch on the right side of the recess.
- Dual panel sunroof: This unique new design incorporates four different functions, all controlled by the single sunroof switch in the traditional location.
1. Interior ventilation via tilting up rear of front panel.
2. Front panel open full or part way over front seats.
3. Front panel tilted up in rear, and rear panel full or part way open over rear seats.
4. Openings over front rear seats.
- Cargo Area: The rear cargo area can be set up in a variety of ways by means of the divided rear seats, which are divided 2/3 left, 1/3 right. This allows long items to be carried while still retaining the ability to carry one or two passengers in the rear
A cover for the rear load area is provided to screen valuables from view. This cover rolls up and can be removed. A storage compartment is provided under the cargo floor for the spare tire and small items. A second compartment holds the vehicle jack and tire changing tools. The tool kit normally carried under the trunk lid is in a flip down tray in the tailgate.
- Roof Rack System: Accessory roof carriers are available which fasten to adjustable attachment points that are concealed under the roof rail trim. Roof capacity is 100 kg (220 lbs.).
- Rear Window Wiper Washer: A convenient system of keeping the rear window clean and clear, which is controlled from the existing wiper control stalk.
The wiper is mounted to the rear window, and the drive shaft engages a motor in the tailgate when the window is in a closed position. The window washer operates via a pop up spray nozzle when the control stalk is pushed forward.
- Suspension: The 525i Touring's suspension has been recalibrated for the slightly increased weight and different weight distribution from the sedan.
An engine driven self leveling rear suspension as used in the M5 is also included. This compensates for the weights which may be periodically carried in the cargo compartment.
In addition, larger (225/60 R15) tires are used on the Touring.
