SUBJECT:
Failure of Acoustic Relay in Instrument Cluster

MODELS:
5 Series (E34), 7 Series (E32) - Vehicles Produced 10/92 to 9/93

Situation:
The acoustic relay (audible turn signal indicator) may fail sporadically, due to residue left from the manufacturing process causing the armature on the relay to stick.

Vehicles Affected:
E32 and E34 vehicles produced 10/92 to 9/93.

Correction:
If this complaint is encountered, clean the relay armature using the procedure described.

Procedure:

Use the stepped drill bit (tool number 62 1 131) to carefully drill through the rear of the instrument cluster casing. Drill through the letter "Y" of the word "Germany" as illustrated.

Note:
This can be done easily by hand. If a power drill motor is used, be careful not to drill past the step on the drill bit, or damage to the underlying circuit board may result. Remove all shavings.

Attach the spray pipe to the spray can of CRC QD Contact Cleaner (CRC part no. 5101 or 5102) and insert it into the hole as illustrated at an angle of 45° (but still level in the horizontal plane). Spray the acoustic relay for 1-2 seconds.

Before reinstalling the Instrument Cluster, ensure that the acoustic relay and other functions of the Instrument Cluster are operating correctly.

Parts Information:
The stepped drill bit is included in the Repair Kit used for a similar problem with the acoustic transmitter in the E36 Instrument Cluster (see S.I. 62 04 92 (3539) dated April 1993). This drill bit is to be re-used for the above described repair. The gauge included in the Repair Kit is not used in this repair.

If additional Repair Kits are required, they may be ordered through your Parts Distribution Center using Part Number 90 88 6 621 130.

Also required is a contact cleaning spray, CRC QC Contact Cleaner (CRC Part No. 5101 or 5102).

Note:
This contact cleaner is available locally, and is manufactured by CRC Industries, 885 Louis Dr., Warminster, PA 18974. If this cleaner cannot be located, call CRC Industries for assistance at (800) 556-5074 (outside Pennsylvania or at (215) 674-4300 (within Pennsylvania). The cleaner is available in 6 Oz. (part # 5101) and 16 oz. (part # 5102) spray cans.

No other cleaning spray is approved for this application. Use of other cleaning sprays may damage components of the Instrument Cluster. Such damage will not be covered by Warranty.

Warranty Information:
Parts and labor are reimbursable under the terms of the BMW New Car Limited Warranty of 4 Years/50,000 Miles.
