THE PROCEDURE OUTLINED IN THIS SERVICE INFORMATION BULLETIN SHOULD BE PERFORMED ON ALL AFFECTED VEHICLES THE NEXT TIME SUCH VEHICLE IS IN THE SHOP FOR MAINTENANCE OR REPAIRS.

SUBJECT:
Vibration Damper

MODELS:
E34 - 525iA, 525iT

Situation:
A droning noise may be heard at idle in Drive with the air conditioning switched on, on vehicles produced after 9/94.

Vehicles Affected:
This Service Action involves E34 vehicles with M50TU engines which were produced from 9/14/94 - 9/30/94.

In order to determine if a specific vehicle is affected by this Service Action, it will be necessary to utilize the "Service Menu" of the DOS (Dealer Communications System). Proceed to "Inquiries;" Vehicle History" and enter the chassis number (last seven characters) of the vehicle in question. Based on the response of the system, either proceed with the corrective action or take no further action.

The Chassis Number Ranges listed below are only for informational purposes and are not to be considered as the only deciding factor. The affected vehicles are limited to vehicles within these ranges but not all of these vehicles are affected by the Service Action. The final decision is the DCS inquiry.

Correction:
A vibration damper, BMW P/N 18 20 1 744 124, must be installed on the rear left side exhaust hanger bracket of all affected vehicles.





Procedure:
- Install the vibration damper on the left side exhaust hanger bracket as shown in the illustration, using M8x16 bolt (1). Tightening torque 24 Nm (18 ft.lb.).

- Position the safety cable over the exhaust hanger doughnut and fasten the other end of the cable to the tapped hole in the left side of the damper's rear surface using a bolt M8x16 (2). Tightening torque 24 Nm (18 ft. lb.).

Service Action Label Instructions:
This Service Action has been assigned code number 125. After the vehicle has been checked, and corrected if necessary, obtain a label (SD 92-050) and:

a) emboss your BMW dealer warranty number in the middle of the label (1);

b) punch out code number 125 printed on the label (2); and





c) bend the label to crease an edge and remove the backing paper. Then affix the label to the B pillar as shown:

If the vehicle already has a label from a previous Service Action/Recall Campaign, affix the new label next to the old one. Do not affix one label on top of another one because a number from an underlying label could appear in the punched-out hole of the new label.

Warranty Information:
Covered under the terms of the BMW New Car Emissions Warranty. Reimbursement for this Service Action will be provided through Campaign Entry.
