SUBJECT:
Thrust Rod Removal Tool
MODELS:
E-32 and E-34
Situation:
In order to eliminate the need to unbolt the steering arm from the spring strut to allow removal of the thrust rod, a new Special Tool has been developed. Using this tool the thrust rods may be disconnected from the steering arm after the wheel has been removed. The tool also fits E-28, E-24 and E-23 models.
This tool will be sent to all dealers under the Automatic Tool Shipment Program. Additional tools can be ordered directly through your Parts Distribution Center.
Since the use of this tool substantially alters the repair procedure, affected flat rate times will be modified accordingly i.e., removal of 3 bolts, cleaning of bolt and bore threads, and resecuring with Loctite(R) has been eliminated.
Special Repair Hint: In order to facilitate the removal of the nut that holds the Thrust Rod to the cross member it is necessary to alter a 22 mm open end wrench to the approximate dimension stated in the illustration.
Note
For removal and installation of bushings, use only BMW special tools 88 88 6 311 052 and 88 88 6 311 053.
