Steering Gear: Service and Repair

REMOVING AND INSTALLING POWER STEERING GEAR


Draw off hydraulic fluid in tank - never reuse it.


Installation:
Fill and bleed hydraulic system.


Cars with SRS:
Remove steering wheel.

Unscrew nut.






Press tie rod off of steering drop arm with Special Tool 32 2040.


Installation:
Replace self-locking nut.

Unscrew bolt.






Push universal joint off of the steering gear.


Installation:
Bolt must be in locking groove of the steering stub. Tightening torque 22 Nm. (16 ft. lbs.).


Installtion:
Check straight ahead position of steering wheel and steering gear. Turn steering wheel counterclockwise or clockwise against the stop and then turn it back about 1.7 turns until marks are aligned.






Unscrew hydraulic pipes. Plug bores with dust caps. If applicable, pull off plug on converter of Servotronic.






Installation:
Replace seals. Tightening torque 45 Nm. (32.5 ft. lbs.).



Unscrew steering gear mounting bolts (1 and 2).
Remove steering gear.
