SUBJECT:
Repeated Failure of Fuse # 20 (Parked Car Venting)

MODELS:
1993/1994 MY E34

Situation:
Under certain rare circumstances, activation of the Parked Car Ventilation system causes fuse # 20 to blow, even though there is no electrical fault.

Cause:

Production changes during 1992 include a stronger blower motor and an increased blower fan speed for positions 2, 3, and 4. The increased current as a result of these changes, combined with operating the parked car venting on fan speed 4, may attempt to draw as much as 12 amps through the 10-amp fused circuit. This is especially true if the door is opened with the key in the ignition, causing the warning gong to chime. (The gong and IHKR are also sourced through the same fuse.)

Correction

Replace fuse # 20 with a 15-ampere rated fuse. Correct the power distribution box cover label with a permanent marker.

Warranty Information:

Parts and labor covered under the terms of the applicable BMW New Car Limited Warranty.
