Timing Cover: Service and Repair




REMOVING AND INSTALLING TIMING CASE COVER
- Engine Removed -


Remove cylinder head cover:
Cylinder Head Assembly


Remove oil sump:
Oil Pan


Remove vibration damper:
Removing Vibration Damper


Remove hub for vibration damper:

Remove alternator drive belt.
Check drive belt for coolant and oil residues, replace if necessary.

CAUTION! It is essential to replace drive belt if it comes into contact with hydraulic fluid.

Installation:
When fitting the drive belt, ensure it is correctly located on the pulleys.







Drain coolant.
Remove the water hoses from the thermostat housing.







Unscrew suspension eye.
Remove thermostat housing.







Installation:
Replace seal.







Installation:
Check installed direction.
Vent or arrow faces up.
Replace O-ring.







Remove water hose after oil filter.







Unfasten sensor.







Take off cover.







Release tensioning roller.







Release bearing block.







NOTE:
The hydraulic belt tensioner is filled with oil, so that a removed element must always be stored standing upright.

Incorrectly stored elements can normally be bled by compressing several times.

Installation:
Check installed direction.







Hold belt pulley in position on drive belt and unscrew bolts.







Drive out dowel pins on timing case cover towards rear of vehicle. (diameter of punch less than 5 mm)







If necessary, remove VANOS adjustment unit.
Unscrew timing case cover to cylinder head bolts. Pull up bolts.







Unfasten screws and lift off timing case cover.







CAUTION!
Check cylinder head gasket for damage; if necessary, remove cylinder head and replace cylinder head gasket







Installation:
Clean sealing surfaces.
Drive dowel pins into timing-case cover in such a way that they protrude by about 2 to 3 mm.







Installation:
Secure new seals to timing case cover with a little grease.







Installation:
Apply Drei Bond 1209 sealing compound, see BMW Parts Service, to the following areas:
- A bead at the transitions to the cylinder head gasket on the left and right.
- Thinly and evenly to the entire sealing face of the timing case cover to the cylinder head gasket.







Installation:
Install timing case cover, insert all screws and initially tighten to approx. 5 Nm.







Installation:
Drive in dowel pins flush from front end.







Installation:
Fully tighten all screws in alternate sequence.
Tightening torque:
M6 screw = 10 Nm
M7 screw = 15 Nm
M8 screw = 22 Nm
M10 screw = 47 Nm



CAUTION!
If all screws are tightened, they must be tightened again in a second operation.







Insert screws, tighten screw connection for timing case cover to cylinder head.







Replace radial seal in timing case cover at bottom.

Assemble engine.
