Removing Crankshaft

REMOVING CRANKSHAFT

-Engine Removed -

- M50/TU VANOS -


Remove oil sump:
Oil Pan


Remove vibration damper:
Removing Vibration Damper


Remove hub for vibration damper:
Removing Vibration Damper Hub

Remove lower timing case cover:
Timing Cover

Remove clutch:


Remove flywheel:








Fit special tool 11 2 383 to crankshaft.

Remove sprocket with special tool 11 2 000 in conjunction with special tool 11 2 004 or with standard extractor tool.






Installation:
Check Woodruff key for correct fit.

Heat sprocket with hot air blower or on hot plate to maximum of 150° C.

Caution!
because of the rubber, do not exceed specified temperature!






Unscrew main-bearing-cap bolts.
Remove main-bearing caps (1... 7).
Lift out crankshaft.






Note:
- Bearing caps (1 ... 5) are marked on the exhaust side.
- Bearing caps 6 and 7 are not marked.

Bearing cap 6 is the thrust bearing.






Installation:
Install bearing shells (1) with a lubricating groove and one retaining lug in crankcase.

Install bearing shells (2) without a continuous lubricating groove and with two retaining lugs in the bearing caps.






Installation:
Ensure that the oil spray jets are used at bearings 2... 7.

Installation:
Lubricate bearing shells.
Install crankshaft.

Mount bearing caps 1... 7 (bearing No.1 is at camshaft drive end) in such a way that grooves of bearing-shell guide are all on the same side.

Align bearing caps precisely.

Note:
The crankshaft thrust bearing shells are fitted to bearing point 6.

Installation:
Main-bearing-cap bolts must always be replaced with new bolts.
Keep oil out of tapped bores (danger of cracking the block).
Wash bolts and lubricate with oil.






Bearing-cap tightening procedures:

1st step: tighten bolts to tightening torque in Nm (ft.lbs.).

2nd step: Tightening screws with special tool 11 2 110 and/or special tool 00 9 120 with torsion angle.
