Connecting Rod Bearing: Service and Repair

REPLACING CONNECTING-ROD BEARING SHELLS

Piston removed






Caution!
Note grinding stage of crankshaft.






For each connecting rod, install red and blue bearing shell (irrespective of color coding on connecting rod shaft).






Install piston and check connecting-rod bearing play:
Place special tool 00 2 590 (Plastigage model PG 1) oil-free crankshaft.

Piston in BDC position.
Mount bearing cap so that pair numbers are aligned.







Caution!
Do not turn the connecting rods or crankshaft.

Use the old connecting-rod bolts to check connecting- rod clearance.
Tighten connecting-rod bolts with special tool 00 9 120 or with special tool 11 2 110.






Remove bearing cap and read off bearing clearance from width of crushed plastic thread with measuring scale.
